Rhode Island athletes are gearing up for the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games, taking flight with the Special Olympics Airlift — a journey that marks the start of an unforgettable experience. The excitement is electric and for Rhode Island’s Jamar Abney and Thomas Palmer, this journey is life-changing.

Jamar, a softball athlete, can’t wait. “I’m most excited about the chance to do something special and take on new challenges. Meeting new friends, learning from amazing athletes across the country — it’s incredible,” he said. For Jamar, the Games are about more than competition; they're about connection and growth.

“When I went in 2022, I made friends I still talk to today. The Airlift made it unforgettable. We took selfies, played games — it was amazing,” he said.

Thomas, competing in cornhole, shares that same spark. “I’m excited to meet new people and help first-timers see how much fun they’ll have. Flying in a private plane was so cool — I felt like a movie star! The pilots were awesome,” he said.

Both athletes are bursting with pride to represent Rhode Island. “Competing in the USA Games means so much — it’s a huge stage!” says Jamar. Thomas adds, “It means everything to compete with my family cheering me on. I want to give it my all.”

As the countdown continues, the Special Olympics Airlift is more than a flight — it’s a launchpad for dreams, friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.
